MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do you have an hourly minimum?
Minimum time with crew of 2 movers is 2 hours, and crew of 3+ movers is 3 hours. Any time after is pro-rated by quarter hour (15 minutes). The balance due will be determined by the actual number of hours required to complete your move.
Are you insured?
Yes, we are insured and our movers are covered on their job-sites. Should any of your belongings be lost or damaged during the move as a result mover’s negligence they will be covered under our basic coverage, which provides 60 cents per pound based on the item lost or damaged. Please note that our basic coverage does not recognize the monetary value of individual belongings.
What form of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, debit, credit cards and Interac email money transfers. Please note a 3.5% processing fee applies with most cards. For long-distance moves, 50% of the payment is required upon pick up, and the remaining balance is due upon delivery.
When does the billing start?
The clock starts running once our movers arrive at your pick-up address, and the hourly rate continues through loading and unloading. The clock stops at your drop-off location once the truck is empty and all set-up tasks are completed.
What is travel time?
Travel time is a flat rate determined by the amount of time it takes for us to drive our truck from our premises to your pick-up location and back to our premises from your drop-off location. The flat-fee for travel time from and to our premises does not include the driving time from your pick-up location to your drop-off address.
How long does the average move take?
You must remember that every move is unique. It all depends not only on the amount of your inventory, but also on the distance between the pick up site and final destination, whether and traffic conditions, etc. Estimates below are based on work of 2-3 movers, depending on the size of the property:
♦ 1 bedroom apartment = 3- 6 hours
♦ 2-3 bedroom apartment/condo = 4- 7 hours
♦ 2-3 bedroom house = 5- 8 hours
♦ 3-5 bedroom house = 7- 10 hours
Do you provide boxes?
If you are interested in buying moving boxes, you can check out moving supplies here or speak with our relocation consultant. The sizes vary.
Do you provide packing services?
Yes, Urban Movers provide packing and unpacking as an additional service. You may hire us for complete packing if you would like us to pack your entire home or you may choose partial packing if you would like us to pack only some areas of your home, like kitchen for example.
Can I pay for my pack and move together?
Payment will be required for each service on the date the service is performed, so your pack and move will be paid for separately as different transactions.
Will You Help Pack My Items?
We offer reasonably priced packing services if you are unable to pack your items on your own. Should you require our packing services, however, we recommend that you arrange for them prior to your moving date to allow for sufficient planning. The time our movers spend packing your items will be billed based on our standard hourly rate.
How should I pack my boxes?
If you choose to do some or all of your own packing in preparation for your move, boxes should be packed tightly with padding after items are inside to prevent shifting during transportation. You can use anything like packing paper, blankets, towels, or linens to pack these boxes tight. Be sure that the top of the box is firm and that you do not leave any empty space inside which would cause a box to crush.
Do not pack boxes too heavy! For example, books should be packed in smaller cartons, so they can be moved without causing back strain for you or for the mover!
Remember, if we pack the boxes, then we are liable for any loss or damage during the move. If you pack your own cartons/boxes, then we are liable for loss or damage only if there is obvious damage to the carton (such as crushed corners).
How long does average packing help take?
Packs vary greatly depending on the level of service that you require, but here’s a rough approximation of the duration of packing appointments:
Studio: 2–3 hours
1-bedroom: 2–4 hours
2-bedroom: 3–5 hours
3-bedroom: 4–6 hours
4-bedroom: 5–8 hours
We cannot guarantee these times; they are based on averages of historical data. Your crew will work as long as needed based on your specific needs.
What if the actual time is longer or shorter than estimate?
An estimate is just that and while our estimates are typically very accurate, there are sometimes unforeseeable events that can lengthen a move (traffic, more stuff than anticipated, bad weather). Clearly, we do our best to hit or beat our targets. If when we arrive we notice a longer move than expected, we will adjust our estimate on the scene.
Will you re-assemble my furniture upon delivery and place it where needed?
Yes. All labeled boxes will be placed in each appropriate room. Anything our movers took apart at the origin point, we will put back together and place each item exactly where needed. However, if an item requires special knowledge or tools we cannot service it, nor do we guarantee assembly of any items that are new and still in their original box. We reserve the right to refuse assembly of furniture that was not taken apart by our movers.
When should I schedule my move?
We suggest scheduling your move as early as you can. The farther out you can plan your move, the greater the availability you will have in choosing a date and time that works for you. Generally, we recommend contacting us at least one or two weeks prior to your moving date. However, if you have a shorter window we will try our best to accommodate a last minute move.
Will the movers uninstall my AC unit and TV?
Urban Movers does not offer TV or AC mounting, or any wall mounting services. We recommend that you hire professionals who specialize in these services prior to your move day.
Do i need to pack lamps?
It is best for all items to be boxed up (if you did not select packing services). The crew can help with packing, and if needed custom make boxes for them. Additional fees may apply.
Can you move plants?
We can move plants if absolutely necessary, but strongly recommend that you move any plants yourself and are not liable for any damages sustained by your plants during transportation.
Can i leave my drawers full, and tape them shut?
We would ask for all drawers to be emptied, the crew would then wrap them leaving them in the dressers / cabinets. This will make the move safer, and leave your furniture in best condition.
Is there anything the crew can not move?
We unfortunately cannot move propane tanks, firearms, or flammable items. All liquids being moved should be closed and boxed.
Do I need to ne at the property all day while movers are there?
We encourage our customers to remain with us throughout the entire move, not least because when we are moving items such as furniture you can then point out any scratches, marks, or dents that we may have missed, or vice versa. If for whatever reason you are not available during your move, or if you need to leave during your move, we will need you to assign a person that will act on your behalf and could guide and supervise the movers, release or accept all of the items in the condition that we bring them to your location. Otherwise, we will not be responsible for any missing or damaged items, nor will we be held responsible for any items that were not moved.
Can I help during the move?
For liability purposes, you cannot move items with our crew. We prefer you let our crew handle the move, but you can get everything ready before they arrive to speed up the move.
How should I prepare for the moving day?
- Donate unwanted items. You will make someone happy and save time and money on your move.
- Pack 1 separate box with things you need for the next 24 hours.
- Properly mark each box for the specific area of your home and write FRAGILE on any box that has fragile stuff inside.
Should I clean my walkway/stairs of snow/ice for the movers, or will they do this?
The customer is expected to have walkways clear of all obstructions before we arrive to ensure safety for all concerned – and to save time and money on your move. If you can’t do this, you need to let us know ahead of time, so we can prepare accordingly.
